Gas works: registered gas contractors and the eight classes of work
Under the Gas Safety Ordinance (Cap. 51) and its regulations, gas installation work must be done by registered gas installers employed by a registered gas contractor. EMSD's list shows which classes of work each contractor's installers cover:
- LPG hotplates (cylinders)
- Domestic pipework and meters
- Domestic pipework, meters and appliances
- Domestic appliance servicing
- Non-domestic pipework and meters
- Non-domestic pipework, meters and appliances
- Non-domestic appliance servicing
- Industrial appliances (process)
A new gas water heater or hob in a flat involves “domestic pipework, meters and appliances” (Class 3); servicing an appliance only is Class 4. Rely on EMSD's list and the contractor, and ask the installer for their registration card.
